The Central States Collegiate Hockey League, Division II post-season
tournament was held this past weekend in Aberdeen, SD. Participating
were:
Northern Conference Southern Conference
#1 Northern State Univ (SD) #1 St. Louis Comm. College
#2 Univ. of South Dakota at Meramec
#2 Univ. of Northern IA
Saturday, 3/5 USD vs. Meramec 2-11
UNI vs. NSU 5-4
Sunday, 3/6 USD vs. NSU 5-4 ot
UNI vs. Meramec 3-6
A few comments: The USD vs. Meramec game was very rough, with 31
penalties called, including several majors and a DQ. A Meramec player
was checked from behind with enough force to remove his helmet and a
large portion of his ear, which required a dozen or so stitches. Later
in the same game, a USD player was checked (cleanly) into the boards,
resulting in a ruptured spleen which required emergency surgery.
NSU simply played with little enthusiasm and poor defense during both
games. It was a shame to see the team awarded a trophy for 1st place in
the conference, then see them walk away with nothing for the tourney.
In related news, CSCHL-II commissioner Wayne Gholson announced his
resignation effective as soon as a new commissioner was elected. He
plans to go back to school for a masters degree. The league will meet
again on 3/26/94 in Waterloo, IA to consider the candidates and vote.
