Comments on this week's ranking ...
1. The big gainers this week were the CCHA's Lake Superior (25th to 17th
place with a sweep over Bowling Green (stayed in 11th place)) and
Miami (26th to 21st place with a sweep over Michigan State (fell from
10th to 12th place)).
2. Vermont jumped from 14th to 10th place with a home sweep of Union and
RPI, but with much help from the previous 10th-13th place teams
Michigan State (0-2), Bowling Green (0-2), Princeton (1-1) and
Harvard (1-1) as the wins were against bottom 1/3 teams (St Lawrence
and Cornell).
3. Although enough games have been played now to allow us to see a
relatively stable week-to-week ranking, the final 3 week of the
season and the conference play-offs are critical to all teams vying
for the NCAA tournament and for the best possible seed in that
tournament.
4. Colorado College beat Northern Michigan twice this week, as predicted
by their respective rankings. As it was, Colorado College's
foot-hold on 4th place became precarious as Northern Michigan's
Preliminary Index of 15.33 is in the bottom third of all teams.
Should Colorado College have lost those two games, however, they
would have fallen to 7th place (in a virtual tie with 8th place
Denver. Northern Michigan might have ended any hopes of a top-12
finish with their two losses moving from 23rd to 29th place. Had
Northern Michigan won both, they would have jumped in the HEAL
ranking from 23rd to 19th (and close to 17th).
5. Both the post-Beanpot HEAL and RPI have "clumps" of teams at the top
(places 1-3 and places 4-7). Both HEAL and RPI agree on the teams in
those "clumps", but disagree on "within clump" position.

On "The Heal Point System" ...
The Heal Point System is used to rank secondary schools in Maine in
several sports. The Heal Point System was developed many years ago by
Durwood Heal to rank Maine secondary school basketball teams.
On the Maine secondary school calculation ...
"P.I." stands for "Preliminary Index". "P.I." is calculated for each
team by giving a team 40 points for each win and 20 points for each tie,
and then dividing by the number of scheduled games. Minimum "P.I." is
1.00.
"T.I." stands for "Tournament Index" and is used to rank the teams.
"T.I." is calculated for each team by summing the "P.I." of the
opponents for each win, one half the "P.I." for each tie, then dividing
by the number of games scheduled and then multiplying by 10.
Note: This Division I college hockey "Heal Point System" ranking uses
the number of games played instead of the number of games scheduled.
Since all games in Division I college hockey are normally played,
there is no difference between this and the traditional Heal Point
System at end of season and this method produces better preliminary
results.
Game scores for this ranking have been provided by Mike Machnik and
HOCKEY-L, The College Hockey Discussion List, an internet mailing list
hosted by The University of Maine System. Mr. Machnik's composite of
all Division I men's ice hockey games is available in the HOCKEY-L
([log in to unmask]) archives as file "9495COMP SCHEDULE".
