You are correct.  The IMPETUS for the shot must be a legal shot by the
stick of an attacking player, or any shot (most likely mistakenly) by a
defending player.  Any non-intentional deflections by either side (bouncing
off a player, a skate, etc.) do not affect the calling of the goal.  If,
however, the referee judges that the path of the puck was re-directed by
an attacking player by glove, body, or skate, then the goal is disallowed.
 
Goals scored from high sticks are disallowed unless high sticked by a
defending player into his own net.
