Summary:
Missed opportunities and some defensive lapses cost Union a chance to
run its unbeaten streak to 8 games on Tuesday night. Union opened the game
poorly, allowing the play to stay in front of Jim Helkie. Plattsburgh scored
twice within 17 seconds to open a quick 2-0 lead. The teams traded goals in the
middle of the 1st, then Union's Dalton Menhall scored his team-leading 14th
goal of the season to pull the Dutchmen within 1.
That momentum carried into the beginning of the 2nd, as the Dutchmen
came out in the 2nd and kept a lot of pressure on the Plattsburgh goalie, but
couldn't put it past him. After a few minutes and a definite momentum shift,
Union ended up spending a lot of time in the defensive zone, just icing the
puck to clear the zone.
Plattsburgh got the first 2 scores of the 3rd period to open up a 3
goal lead with under 8 minutes left. The Dutchmen had some good scoring
opportunities toward the end of the game, but could only manage one goal, at
4:53. Union continually had shots go just wide, or be tipped by the defensemen,
as Plattsburgh was very quick to get to the puck.
It was nice to have a game with so few penalties after the Norwich
game. Both teams could have scored a lot more goals, as each side missed some
very good opportunities. Union falls to 11-3-2 in the league, 12-4-2 overall.
Plattsburgh improves to 15-6 in the league, 16-6-1 overall.
Union finishes the current homestand on Saturday night, hosting the RIT
Tigers. With Union moving up to Division I next season, it will be Coach
Delventhal's last chance to beat his old team.
