SCSU Men's Hockey Release 1/08/01
Upcoming Games:
    Jan. 12 - #7/#8 SCSU vs. Michigan Tech, 7:05 p.m.
    Jan. 13 - #7/#8 SCSU vs. Michigan Tech, 7:05 p.m.

UPCOMING GAMES: The #7/#8 St. Cloud State menıs hockey team (15-4-1, 9-4-0
WCHA) will host Michigan Tech (5-14-1, 3-11-0 WCHA) this weekend. The games
on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13, both start at 7:05 p.m. and will be played in the
National Hockey Center (cap. 5,763) on the campus of SCSU. SCSU was ranked
#8 in the last USA Today/AHM poll and in the USCHO poll, SCSU was ranked #7
on Jan. 2.

THE RESULTS: SCSU collected a 6-3 win at Minnesota-Duluth on Jan. 5, as Mike
Walsh scored the game winning goal at 6:19 of the third period. SCSU fell
behind early in the match at 1-0 before defender Brian Gaffaney carded his
first goal of the season at 5:26 of the first. Ryan Malone put the Huskies
up by one with a power play goal at 7:07 of the second followed by another
power play tally from Mark Hartigan at 18:45 of the second. Walsh scored
the game winner in the final period before Tyler Arnason and Jon Cullen
(shorthanded) iced the game with late goals. Of note, Malone posted two
assists in the game along with Brandon Sampair and Joe Motzko. Scott Meyer
was the goalie of record with 33 saves in the game. All of UMDıs goals were
scored on the power play against SCSU. The Huskies outshot UMD 38-36...SCSU
battled back on Jan. 6, to gain a 5-4 win at UMD. SCSU trailed 2-0 in the
second before Duvie Westcott broke the shutout with a power play goal at
1:05 of the second. UMD pushed the score to 3-1 at 5:47 of the second
before SCSU unleashed four unanswered goals. Malone started at 14:21 of the
second with a power play tally. Next up was Hartigan, who scored at 5:34 of
the third, and Arnason, who scored at 6:51 of the third. Sampair notched
the game winner at 14:42 on the power play with assists from Westcott and
Arnason. Meyer gained 29 saves in the game, while UMD outshot the Huskies
33-29.

HEAD COACH: SCSU coach Craig Dahl (Pacific Lutheran, 1976) in his 14th
season as head coach for the Huskies. He is the only coach that SCSU has
had since moving to the NCAA Division I level in 1987-88. Dahl has a career
record of 244-237-38 at SCSU and a 20-year career coaching mark of
320-325-40. Dahl won his 300th career game on 2/19/00. In 1997-98, Dahl
was named the WCHA Coach of the Year. He has won more games than any SCSU
hockey coach. In 2000-01, Dahl will be assisted by Doc DelCastillo (SCSU,
1992) in his third season and first year coach Brad Willner (Lake Superior
State, 1995).

ALL-TIME RECORD: The Huskies and Coach Dahl both own a 244-237-38 record
since the program went Division I in 1987-88. This is the first season that
the Huskies have gone above .500 with their overall record since going
Division I...The Ferris State game on Oct. 13th was the 500th Division I
hockey game in the history of the program at SCSU. The game was also Dahlıs
500th as a coach at SCSU.

HUSKY BITS: Jeff Finger posted an assist on Dec. 16, which snapped a
13-game scoreless streak for the frosh defender... Ritchie Larson equalled
the best game of his career with three points vs. UAA on Dec. 16. Larson
also had three points vs. DU in 1999-00. He now has nine goals and 14
assists in his career...Jake Moreland saw his first action in the nets since
coming in to relieve Scott Meyer during a 4-3 loss at Minnesota on Nov. 18.
Moreland is 2-1 this season with a 2.26 GAA and a .910 save%...SCSU was
outshot by UAA on Dec. 16, which has not too uncommon this season. SCSU has
been outshot by its opponents 10 times this year but the Huskies do own a
7-3 record in those game...SCSU gained a season low with only eight
penalties during the UAA series. SCSU equalled a season low with only four
penalties for eight minutes on Dec. 16. SCSU also had four penalties for
eight minutes vs. Ferris on Oct. 14.

STILL HOT: Jon Cullen has been on a roll with a point in the past 10 games
for SCSU. Cullen had a shorthanded goal and an assist on Jan. 5 and an
assist on Jan. 6. He currently has eight goals and nine assists this season
and ranks third on the team in scoring. Not bad, considering he only had
one goal in the teamıs first 10 games.

POSSIBLE 100-POINT CLUB MEMBERS: Tyler Arnason continues to move toward
membership in the 100 point club. He now has 98 career points (42g/57a) and
has 9g/9a this season... Brandon Sampair is also filling out his membership
card in the 100-point club with 97 career points (41g/56a). He has 4g/14a
this season. Sampair and Arnason would become the 24rd and 25th players in
team history (all Divisions) to reach the 100-point level in their careers.
The last person to hit 100 career points was Sacha
Molin, who had 102 points from 1995-98.

GREAT BEGINNINGS: The Huskies continue their best-ever start in team
history at 15-4-1 overall. The previous best start over 20-games was a
14-4-2 start in 1997-98.

ON A ROLL: The Huskies are in the midst of a five-game WCHA win streak that
dates back to a 5-0 win at home over Wisconsin. Since that time, SCSU has
gained a pair of WCHA wins over UAA and UMD. SCSU has won six consecutive
games on the road dating back to a Nov. 18 loss at UM and is now 9-1 on the
road.

LaMERE BREAKS THE ICE: Freshman defender Ryan LaMere scored his first
collegiate point on Jan. 5 with his assist on Jon Cullenıs shorthanded goal
in the third period against Minnesota-Duluth. In the game, senior defender
Brian Gaffaney scored his first goal of the season. In his four-year career
at SCSU, Gaffaney now has five goals and 12 assists...Nate DiCamirro
returned from a six-game injury lay-off on Jan. 5 and responded with his
sixth assist of the season. DiCasmirro added another assist on Jan. 6, to
push his career total to 39 - which places him 25th in SCSU history.
