I heard it this way, too. I drove over to Buffalo for the Sabres/Kings game
last night and had a similar confused discussion with the friends I was with.
None of us had heard of such a rules change.

As long as we are on the subject of comments by the announcers...

One of them said that Italy (or France) had qualified for Olympic play in the
pool they are in by beating "so-and-so" in the "such-and-such tournament". How
is the placement of the teams in the two pools determined, and were some
countries denied the right to enter a team in the Olympics because they didn't
win enough games in the "such-and-such"? If the number of entrants was
limited, is this the same for all sports? I know the US has Olympic qualifiers
to determine the "best" people to send, but is it further limited to a specific
total number by the IOC? Was "Eagle Eddie" that good of a ski jumper prior to
the Calgary Olympics that he beat out competition from other countries? 8-)

Also, I was "amused" to hear the requirements for participation on the Italian
hockey team:

   - Italian ancestry, by blood or marriage
   - Played for 3+ years in a league in Italy
   - Valid passport to Italy

Thus we have Delfino (?) who lives (and born?) in the US playing goal for Team
Italy. Gates Orlando, whom the announcers said was one of the best "Italian"
players but is out because of an injury, was a very popular "American" player
here in the AHL for the Rochester "Americans" (sorry - that's their name 8-)
Is there a standard set of requirements for participation on a country's team,
or does each country set their own?
