As a University professor who has worked with college hockey players for
27 years at two schools ( both have won NCAA I Nat'l Chapionships) and
and served as Academic Coordinator for about 10 years ( resigned this
year due to increased administrative duties ) as well as being in the
Coaching Education program with USA Hockey, I agree with most of what greenie
had to say about faculty and student perceptions of the favorable
treatment bestowed on athletics. It does occur and the other students get
very upset at times. I disagree, however, that the athletics are amoung
the top students. I believe greenie inplied this. I have found them to be
"average" students or at times some of them to be "above" average. They
are, in general, like any pool of students, some poor and some very good.
We have had many that have been very successful in school and have gone
on to be professionals ( doctors, educators, lawyers, etc. ) and some
that have done very little, just like all other students. One thing I do
know is that the other students do have a perception that the "star"
athletes do get preferential treatment, even at small schools such as
mine. And in some cases, they do.
