Article from November 7, 1990 issue of the _Michigan Tech LODE_:

"Icers grab first WCHA win over North Dakota"
by: Jeff Peters, Staff Writer

The Michigan Tech hockey Huskies finish off their seven game homestand
this weekend by hosting the Universtiy of Alaska-Fairbands Nanooks
Friday and Saturday night. Huskies head coach Newell Brown is wary of
this weekend's games.

"We don't know a grat deal about them. Don Lucia is an excellent coach
and I'm sure he will have his team prepared."

Both games begin at 7:05 at the SDC Ice Arena. THe games can be heard
on WZRK, 93.5 FM.

This weekend is being billed as 93-cent weekend. A limited number of
tickets will be sold for 93 cents at the WMPL/WZRK studios in Hancock.
The seats will be located in the "Dog Pound," a section that Tech
officials hope will be the loudest and most spirited. Each person with
a 93 cent ticket is also eligible to win $93 in cash that night.

This past weekend the Huskies split a pair of games against the league
leading Universtiy of North Dakota.

On Friday night Tech lost a close game to the Fighting Sioux 4-2.

The first period of Friday's game started off slowly. Neither team was
the aggressor. Tech only had 12 shots on goal while North Dakota shot
at Junior Geoff Sarjeant 15 times.

The only real action came 12 minutes into the period when a scuffle
occurred between freshman Kirby Perrault of Tech and Chris Golziman of
UND. Both players received penalties.

Senior Jay Luknowsky had a couple of good attempts on goal during the
penalty but did not score.

At 15:49, the Siouz scored a power play goal, their only goal of the
period, when Justin Duberman put one past a diving Sarjeant. Sarjeant
had seven saved in the period.

The second period was faster paced than the first. North Dakota put
the pressure on early, scoring five minutes into the period.

Tech had many opportunities in the period but they were taken away by
the quicker Sioux.

Dakota scored once again late in the period to end the period at 3-0.

In the third period Michigan Tech came alive, scoring twice in less
than a minute.

The first score came at 6:19 in the period when junior Greg Parnell
netted a pass from sophomore John Young. Geoff Sarjeant also received
an assist on the play.

The next goal came just 50 seconds later when junior Jamie Steer scored
on a Kelly Hurd pass.
*
Unfortunately, that was all Tech could muster. In the closing minutes,
the Huskies pulled Sarjeant to gain the six man advantage.
*
UND scored the capper on an open net goal to close the game at 4-2.

One strong point of Friday's game was taht the Huskies allowed just 22
shots on goal. The last time that happened was in February 1987 against
the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

On Saturday night, an explosive Tech team clobbered the Sioux 6-2.

The first half of the first period belonged to the Huskies. Tech had
21 shots in the period, most of those in the first eight minutes of
play.

North Dakota scored at the 15 minute mark. That was the only score of
the period in which 42 total shots were taken.

The second period belonged to Michigan Tech.

The explosion began on the opening face-off. Freshman Lane Lebel
received a face-off pass from sophomore John Young. Young then passed
the puck to a wide open Kelly Hurd who shot it past an astounded Dakota
goalie. It was only the beginning for Tech and especially Hurd.

Sophomore Randy Lewis scored Tech's second goal of the period, his
forst of the season, 2:36 into the period. The score came on a pass
from junior Reid McDonald and sophomore Rod Ewacha.

At the 13:46 mark of the period, junior Jamie Steer skated around the
Dakota goaltender to score the third Tech goal of the period. Junior
Davis Payne tallied an assist on the score.

A minute later, Hurd scored his second of the period when he skated by
the defense and the goalie. Freshman Jim Storm and sophomore John Young
assisted with the goal.

At that point North Dakota used a time-out and switched goal keepers.

At 15:51, a mere 63 seconds after his second goal, Hurd scored again to
hive him the hat-trick. Storm and Lebel helped him with the score.

North Kakota scored just once in the third period. It was a
short-handed goal that came midway through the period.

Davis Payne socred his forst goal of the season 14:30 into the period.
Payne scored off a rebound. The inital attempt came from junior Jamie
Steer which was blocked by the Dakota goal-tender. That proved to be
the final goal as the Huskies skated on to win 6-2.
