Another solution would be to shorten the first round series, perhaps back to
two games with total goals, or to lengthen the others, perhaps UP to that.
As it stands, the first-place team can play 60% of its  tournament games
against the 10th-place team and still win.
 
Of course, allowing teams to choose their opponents would allow teams
to earn the option to avoid destroying their SoS's.
