These are a few comments to add to Dave Hendrickson's posting
on the subject of incompletes.

There is, I hope, a assumption in his comments about
flunking students ("so pathetically absurd and mean-spirited
it boggles the mind") that the student is passing the
course at the time the drop is requested. If the student
is not passing the Incomplete should not be provided
as a way to allow the student extra time to do the work
that s/he cannot accomplish in the semester (see below).

The term "job relocation" brings up images of an employed student
(such as one taking an evening course at BU) whose employer
offers (or requires) in-semester relocation as part of the job.
The college hockey player is offered a job that requires
relocation. I do not believe they are the same
(although they are similar). How many college basketball
players drop out after the season (during the school year)
to play pro basketball.

This is below (see above)
We have a problem on our campus with students who request an
Incomplete so that they can "retake" the course the next semester,
often but not always with the same instructor. Those making
this request are essentially asking for a drop without penalty
for being in a failing position and retaking without having
to pay again for the course. It's cheating the university
out of money and falsifying the transcript.
