      LAKE SUPERIOR TO HOST CLARKSON, MICHIGAN TRAVELS TO BOSTON UNIVERSITY
 
Central Collegiate Hockey Association Regular Season and Playoff Champion Lake
Superior State University (West #1) will host Clarkson University (East #4)
this weekend, while the University of Michigan (West #3) will travel to Boston
University (East #2) to face the Terriers.
 
Other NCAA Quarterfinal series will feature Minnesota (West #4) traveling to
Maine (East #1) and Northern Michigan (West #2) entertaining Alaska-Anchorage
(West #6).
 
Quarterfinal series are the best two-of-three with the series winners advancing
to the NCAA Semi-Finals held at the St. Paul Civic Center on March 28, 1991.

CCHA PLAYER-OF-THE-WEEK:  University of Michigan junior wing Mike Helber has
been named CCHA Player-of-the-Week for the week ending March 17th.
 
Helber, a 5-11, 185 lb. native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, had seven points (1G,
6A) in Michigan's NCAA First Round win over Cornell.  He scored the Wolverines
second goal Friday knotting the score at two.  In Saturday's 6-4 Michigan win,
Helber recorded three assists (on goals #2, #3 and #5 - Denny Felsner's GWG).
In Sunday's 9-3 win, he again had three assists (on Michigan goal #'s 2, 7 and
nine).  For the weekend he was a +4, and Helber now leads all CCHA scorers
during the post-season with 14 points (3-11).

CCHA Attendance increases: For the 144 CCHA regular season games, the average
attendance increased for the fourth consecutive season with teams averaging
3,190 per contest for a total attendance of nearly 460,000.
 
CCHA average game time:  For 172 games during the regular season the average
game time was 2:19 which includes 29 overtime contests and 18 televised games.
 
Lake Superior unbeaten in 28 straight:  The Lakers are 26-0-2 in their last 28
games heading into this weekend's series with Clarkson in Sault Ste. Marie.
Lake Superior has not lost since November 24th (4-1 at Ferris State), while
allowing four or more goals just five times in the 28 games.
 
Michigan sets school record for power play goals:  With seven man-advantage
goals this past weekend versus Cornell, the Wolverines now have 80 power play
goals on the season besting the school mark of 73 set by the 1976-77 squad
which lost the national championship game 6-5 (OT) to Wisconsin.
 
Dowd now T-19th on NCAA career scoring charts:  Lake Superior senior center
Jim Dowd has scored 269 (88-181) career points to rank in a tie-for-19th among
the NCAA career scoring leaders.  Former CCHA stars Brian Hills ('79-83, BGSU)
and Paul Pooley ('80-84, OSU) are currently tied-for-17th with 270 points.
With three points this weekend, Dowd would move into 14th place.
 
Lakers hoping for quarterfinal success:  Lake Superior has compiled a 1-6-1
mark in NCAA Quarterfinal play.  Last season, the Lakers dropped a pair of
one-goal decisions at Colgate (3-2 and 2-1).  Harvard ended the Lakers season
two years ago with wins of 4-2 and 5-2 in Boston.  At home for the 1988 NCAA
quarterfinals, LSSU defeated Merrimack in total goals 8-4 after losing 4-3 in
the first game of the series.  In 1985, the engineers of RPI defeated and tied
Lake Superior, 7-3 and 3-3, in Troy, New York.

Clarkson at Lake Superior, March 22-24 at LSSU's Norris Center (3,250).
Coaches:  Clarkson - Mark Morris (1990-91 ECAC Coach-of-the-Year) has compiled
a 64-31-8 mark in three years with the Golden Knights.  Lake Superior - Jeff
Jackson (1990-91 CCHA Coach-of-the-Year) has recorded a 35-3-4 mark in his
first season as a collegiate head coach.  Series:  The Lakers lead 2-0-0. LSSU
won 4-3 (OT) in a semi-final contest of the 1984 Syracuse Invitational, while
also winning in Potsdam 4-2 during the 1969-70 season.  LSSU's Keith Martin
had two goals and Randy Exelby turned aside 34 shots in the 1984 meeting.  The
Golden Knights are appearing for the 10th time in the NCAA tourney.  Clarkson
has a 9-14-1 record in NCAA play, winning the 1957 Consolation game with a 2-1
win over Harvard.  Lake Superior is making its fourth consecutive NCAA tourney
appearance and fifth overall.  LSSU won the 1988 title with a 4-3 (OT) win
over St. Lawrence in Lake Placid.  CU's netminding duties have been shared by
sophomore Chris Rogles (15-5-0, 3.09, .896) and freshman Jason Currie (10-2-2,
3.59, .880).  Sophomore Hugo Belanger (29-42-71) leads in scoring, while
seniors Dave Trombley (29-34-63) and Mike Casselman (18-33-51) provide added
punch.  Sophomore Guy Sanderson (9-27-36) is the highest scoring defenseman.
The Golden Knights have won six straight, while the Lakers are 26-0-2 in their
last 28 contests.
 
Michigan at Boston University, March 22-24 at Boston University's Walter Brown
Arena (3,684).  Coaches:  Michigan - Red Berenson has recorded a 139-130-15
mark in his seventh season at the helm of the Wolverines.  Boston University -
Jack Parker has compiled a 374-209-28 mark in 17 years with the Terriers.
Series:  The Wolverines lead 9-4-0.  Michigan won 8-6 at Boston University
earlier this year on November 30th with a five-goal third period after allowing
six first period markers to the Terriers.  Mike Helber's second goal of the
game proved to be the game-winner as Michigan scored the final six goals of
the game.  Chris Gordon made 27 saves in relief of Steve Shields to record the
win.  David Roberts had three goals (one shorthanded) and one assist to pace
Michigan.  Shawn McEachern had a goal and two assists for BU, with Tony Amonte,
Mark Bavis and David Tomlinson all adding a goal and an assist.
