As Charlie posted, Bruce McLeod (UM-D Athletic Director) has been named
WCHA commissioner.
To recap, he was the chair of the search committee, until the last
weeks of the search, when he resigned from the comittee and applied for
the job, apparantly at the urging of the comittee, or some members of
it.
There had been some talk about making the Commissioner a full-time job,
but it has been a part time job for Otto Briettenbach for the past 10
years. As far as that, my opinion is that you choose a leader who you
think has the right vision and ability to work with the various people
and institutions involved, and if that person is only part time, and
there is more work to be done, then the commissioner should hire either
an associate commissioner, or specialists (i.e., marketing, officiating,
etc) to do what needs to be done.
The interesting news is that in the same short report in the
Madison papers he said that
- Ron Foyt will probably not be back as Supervisor of Officials
(paraphrasing, since I don't have the paper here: "It is
time for a change")
- He will be more directly involved in the officating [than Otto was]
- A current ref will be named head ref or supervisor of officials
I spoke with someone in the UW athletic department today, who said that
it would likely be Greg Sheppard. Makes sense to me. The person I spoke
with was surprised, however, at how soon he said what he did about
Foyt.
