It was announced Friday that UAF, after receiveing approval from their Chan-
cellor Joan Wadlow, has sent a letter of Formal application to CCHA Comm-
isioner Bill Beagan and all CCHA Athletic Directors to join the CCHA as a
Full Member starting the 1995-96 season. Though many rumors have circu-
lated in recent months about UAF trying to get into the WCHA, UAF has decided
that the CCHA is the league that they need to apply to. The article also
went on to say that UAF administrators are hopeful that a special meeting
of the CCHA council can be arranged in order to address their application
for Full Membership. If the CCHA rejects UAF they immediately plan on applying
for full membership into the WCHA.
The article goes on to say that it is becoming increasingly more difficult
for UAF to schedule games with Division I conference teams and nearly impossible
e to schedule any games with conference teams after Christmas break.
Personally, UAF needs full membership in order to continue to survive. NO other Division I program has had to go through what UAF has in thrying to gain con
-ference membership. Merrimack and Lowell and now U-Mass want conference mem-
bership, Hockey East says come on in. St. Cloud and Anchorage need a league,
the WCHA says you're in. Notre Dame and Kent need a place, the CCHA opens it's doors. Well now UAF is asking for a league to call HOME. They have a beautiful
Arena in the Carlson Center, 3000+ fans a game and growing, school and fan
support, offering to pay air fare for all conference teams to play games at
UAF, etc...,etc... etc...! Stay tuned. UAF's hockey future is in the hands of
11 Athletic Directors.
