HOCKEY TEAM TIES CONNECTICUT COLLEGE, 3-3 IN OVERTIME

NEW BEDFORD, MA– The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team and visiting Connecticut College exchanged third-period goals and played to a 3-3 overtime tie in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

Connecticut College is the Camels

UMass Dartmouth drew first blood when freshman forward Billy Manning (Stoughton, MA/Bridgewater Jr. Bandits) fired a wrist shot from the right face-off circle past CC goaltender Dan Beauregard (Medfield, MA) at 5:48 of the first period. Senior forward Paul Garabedian (Belmont, MA/Belmont HS) and senior defenseman Tyler Crocker (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) drew assists.

The Camels tied it with less than three minutes remaining in the first period. Trevor Bradley (West Hartford, CT) fired a shot from the point that hit traffic in front and deflected past Corsair junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) at 17:07.

Connecticut College took the lead when Brett Moore (Medfield, MA) deflected Robbie Tesar’s (Lake Bluff, IL) shot home at 1:25 of the second period. UMass Dartmouth tied it when sophomore forward Pat Welch (Dorchester, MA/Bay State Breakers) took a pass from junior forward Peter Shelzi (Belmont, MA/Connecticut) and scored a power play goal at 13:02.

Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) gave the Corsairs a 3-2 lead with 4:53 gone in the third period when he deflected home a shot by senior defenseman Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves). Bradley tied it with his second goal of the game, sneaking in behind the defense and sliding home a shot at 12:35 of the third period. UMass Dartmouth out shot the Camels in the overtime period, 6-0, but were unable to beat Beauregard.

“We had spurts where we played well, and so did they, especially in the second period,” said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. “We weathered that and got a power play goal and took the lead, but then they made a good play to tie it up, and that was the difference.”

The Corsairs, who converted one of three power play opportunities while blanking CC on three opportunities with a man advantage, out shot Connecticut College, 35-23. Green made 20 saves, while Beauregard made 32 stops.

UMass Dartmouth is now 5-2-1 with the tie, while the Camels are 1-5-3. The Corsairs will take time off for semester exams and the holidays, returning to action when they play host Norwich in the first round of the Times-Argus tournament Friday, January 4th. CC will also take time off for the holidays and return to action when they host Manhattanville on January 5th.
