HOCKEY TEAM FALLS AT WESLEYAN, 5-3

MIDDLETOWN, CT– Host Wesleyan broke a 3-3 tie with 3:17 remaining in the third period and went on to defeat the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s hockey team, 5-3, in a non-conference game at Spurrier-Snyder Rink Friday evening.

Kevin Armstrong scored the game-winner for the Cardinals at 16:43 of the third period. Mike Dorsey                added a power play goal with 40 seconds remaining to account for the final score.

Dallas Bossart’s power play goal broke a 2-2 tie and gave Wesleyan a 3-2 lead 3:25 into the third period. The Corsairs tied it on a power play goal by senior defenseman Jon Finn (Warwick, RI/Boston Harborwolves) at the 7:52 mark.  

Each team scored twice in the first period. Senior forward Jeff Grant (Burlington, MA/Austin Prep) put UMass Dartmouth on top at the 4:21 mark, but Brian Erenson scored at 14:43 to tie the score. Sophomore forward Billy Carroll (Duxbury, MA/Bridgton Academy) gave the Corsairs a 2-1 lead at the 16:04 mark, but J.J. Evans scored a power play goal to even the score a minute and a half later. 

The Corsairs, who converted one of seven power play opportunities while allowing Wesleyan to convert three of five opportunities with a man advantage, out shot the Cardinals, 37-31. Junior goaltender Jeff Green (Medway, MA/Valley Jr. Warriors) made 26 saves, while WC goaltender Mike Palladino made 34 stops.

The Corsairs dropped to 5-2-0 with the defeat, while the Cardinals improved to 3-4-0 with the victory.

UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Connecticut College Tuesday evening in the final game prior to semester exams.
