Providence hockey defeated at minnesota, 6-1, in
championship game of mariucci classic
MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated
by the University of Minnesota, 6-1, in the championship game of the
Mariucci Classic at Mariucci Arena on Saturday, December 29.
Minnesota opened a 3-0, first-period lead with the game's first goal just
1:00 minute into the contest and on the game's second shot. PC scored their
first goal at the 13:55 mark of the second period when senior forward Mark
Suderman (Regina, Sask.) fired a low shot past the Gopher goaltender to cut
Minnesota's lead to 3-1. Exactly 1:02 later, Minnesota's Johnny Pohl put the
Gophers back up by three goals at 4-1.
Minnesota added a pair of goals in the third period and claimed the
Mariucci Classic title with the 6-1 victory over Providence.
Providence's junior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) tied
his career-high with 44 saves in the loss. Travis Weber made a total of 24
saves.
