Providence hockey defeats western michigan, 4-1, in first game of mariucci
classic

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. --  The Providence College men's hockey team defeated
Western Michigan University, 4-1, in the first game of the Mariucci Classic
at the University of Minnesota's Mariucci Arena on Friday, December 28.
        The Friars began the scoring in the second period when freshman center
Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) slipped a shot from the low slot past Western
Michigan's goaltender, Mike Mantua. Sophomore defenseman Regan Kelly
(Imperial, Sask.) scored his second goal of the season at the 19:07 mark of
the period when he converted on a feed from junior forward Mike Lucci
(Parma, Ohio).
        The Broncos cut the Providence lead to one goal when Shaun Rose fired a
power-play goal past PC's Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.). PC increased
their margin when junior captain Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) broke in all
alone on Mantua and flipped a back-handed shot of the goaltender's left
shoulder.
        Sophomore Jonathan Goodwin (Taunton, Mass.) scored the game's final goal
with an empty-netter with 26 seconds remaining in the contest.
        Schaefer earned the win and made 31 saves while Mantua recorded 25 saves.
        The Friars play in the championship game of the Mariucci Classic against
the University of Minnnesota at 8:00 p.m. EST.
