St. Cloud State Moves Into First Place
St. Cloud, Minn. -- #6/7 St. Cloud State University men's hockey moved into
the top spot in the WCHA on Jan. 13, with a 4-1 win over Michigan Tech
University (5-16-1, 3-13-0 WCHA) at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
The win pushed the Huskies' record to 17-4-1 overall and 12-4-0 in the WCHA.
The Huskies have 24 points in the WCHA, while North Dakota has 23 points
after suffering a 5-1 loss at Minnesota on Jan. 13. Colorado College and
Minnesota are tied for third with 22 point each.
SCSU led from start to finish in this game as Joe Motzko scored his ninth
goal of the season with assists from Derek Eastman and Jon Cullen at 7:38 of
the first. Senior Tyler Arnason scored at 9:25 of the first to give SCSU a
2-0 lead with an assist from Brandon Sampair and Duvie Westcott.
MTU made it 2-1 in the second period as Tab Lardner scored at 17:26. SCSU
iced the game in the third as Mark Hartigan scored his team leading 15th
goal of the season at 7:43 with an assist from Sampair on the power play.
Arnason added an insurance tally at 19:47 with assists from Ritchie Larson
and Sampair.
On the night, SCSU outshot MTU 44-28 as Husky goalie Scott Meyer had 27
saves in the contest. Brian Rogers was the goalie of record for MTU with 40
saves. On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-4, while MTU went 0-of-3.
SCSU will return to action on Jan. 19-20, with a home non-conference series
against Brown University. Game times at the National Hockey Center are 7:05
p.m. both nights.
