The Huskies of St. Cloud State had one of their biggest wins over #6 ranked
Wisconsin (14-4-2, 8-3-2 WCHA) Friday afternoon at the National Hockey
Center, 9-4. It was St. Cloud State's first win over the Badgers. The
Huskies (10-10-1, 6-6-1) also tied a team record scoring the most goals in a
conference game.
First-year forward Roxanne Stang led St. Cloud State with three goals, her
first triple hat of the season. Stang scored the first goal of the game on
a power play with assists from Ricki-Lee Doyle and Kobi Kawamoto. Less than
a minute later the Badgers tied the game with a goal from first-year forward
Meghan Hunter. Briana Munyon assisted Jenny Jones to give the Huskies a 2-1
lead. Doyle scored her 15th goal of the season at 5:28 to lift the
Huskies up 3-1. The Badgers Nicole Uliasz put one in the back of the net on
a power play, but Stang answered with a goal of her own at 14:29 to give St.
Cloud State a 4-2 lead at the first intermission.
Kawamoto started the second period off with an unassisted goal and the game
winning goal at 3:42. The Badgers caught up to the Huskies at the end of
the second period with goals from Michelle Sikich and Kerry Weiland. The
Huskies went on a scoring spree in the third period, scoring four goals and
holding the Badgers scoreless. One minute and 18 seconds into the final
period, Stand scored her third goal of the game with assists from Fiona
McLeod and Abby Cooper. Seven minutes later Cooper scored her 15th goal of
the season. Doyle wasn't finished yet as she notched in her second goal of
the game, unassisted. Briana Munyon put the icing on the cake with her third
goal of the season with 28 ticks left on the clock.
In the net for the Huskies was sophomore Laura Gieselman, who made 36
incredible saves. The Badgers MacMillan had 21 saves in 48:47 minutes at
the net. Teammate Jennifer Neary finished the game for UW with two saves.
Wisconsin out-shot St. Cloud State 40-32. SCSU was three-for-six on power
plays; the Badgers were two-for-seven. Game two of the WCHA series is
Saturday at the National Hockey Center, 3:05 p.m.
