MICHIGAN TECH TO HOST 36TH ANNUAL GREAT LAKES INVITATIONAL FRI.-SAT.
Field Features MTU, #1 Michigan State, #2 Boston College, and #4 Michigan

Houghton, Mich. -- The Michigan Tech hockey team returns to
action Friday (Dec. 29) and Saturday (Dec. 30) when it hosts the 36th
annual Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
The Huskies (3-13-1) open play in the GLI with a semifinal
matchup against fourth-ranked Michigan (13-3-3) at 7:30 p.m. on Dec.
29. The day's first semifinal will begin at 4 p.m. and features
top-ranked Michigan State (12-1-4) against second-ranked Boston
College (12-3-1). The third-place game is set for a 4 p.m. faceoff on
Dec. 30, with the title tilt to follow at 7:30 p.m.
"I've heard a lot about the GLI over the years," said Mike
Sertich, who took over as MTU's head coach on Nov. 8, after spending
18 seasons guiding the Minnesota-Duluth hockey program. "I know the
kids are looking forward to it with great enthusiasm as am I.
Certainly, the GLI is a cornerstone of the Michigan Tech hockey
program and we're going to do our darnedest to get that GLI title
back to Houghton."

GLI Quick Facts: Michigan Tech has played 11 games (1-9-1)
against team's ranked among the nation's top 15 -- more than any
other team in the GLI. Michigan (3-1-2) and Michigan State (5-0-1)
have each played six games among top 15 teams, while Boston College
(0-2-0) has played two contests against teams in the top 15 . . . The
four coaches in the GLI -- MTU's Mike Sertich (19th year/352 wins),
Michigan State's Ron Mason (35th year/876 wins), Boston College's
Jerry York (27th year/605 wins), and Michigan's Red Berenson (17th
year/434 wins), combine for 100 years of experience and 2,267
victories! . . . Michigan Tech will arrive in Detroit late the night
of Dec. 26. The Huskies will practice at Joe Louis Arena on both Dec.
27 and Dec. 28 . . . In the eight games that Mike Sertich has been
behind the Michigan Tech bench, the Huskies have averaged eight more
shots on goal per game and yielded eight fewer shots on net per game
(based on comparison on first nine games under previous Coach Tim
Watters and last eight games under Sertich).

MTU Hockey News Notes: Former MTU player (1985-89) and
assistant coach Scott White (1994-99) was named the head coach of
the Columbia Inferno last Wednesday (Dec. 20). Columbia is an East
Coast Hockey League expansion franchise which begins play next
season. Also on Wednesday (Dec. 20), the Pee Dee Pride of the East
Coast Hockey League named former Husky Davis Payne (1988-92) as their
new head coach.
