(21Nov98) Late Saturday afternoon at Matthews, the Northeastern Huskies edged
the Saints of St Lawrence 1-0. SLU came up with a good effort and went close
to drawing this game. The Huskies were very fortunate to collect two points.

The match began slowly. Northeastern was in control, but St Lawrence's 1-2
breakout plays and solid fore-checking was giving the Huskies problems. The
only goal of the contest came on an NU power play when first-year Brooke
Whitney (Hilary Witt) took a delicious feed from Witt, went up the gut and
drilled her try home. That strike occurred late in the period, and
Northeastern was lucky to have the lead.

In the second, the Saints looked sharper and stated to press forward into the
NU end. The Huskies were lacking in team speed and their passing was on life-
support. The question crossed my mind: Who are these impostures anyway?

As the final period wore on, SLU's Nicole Kirnan went close several times to
tying it up. Northeastern's goalie Shannon Meyers did well to hold out the
Saints. It appears NU's goal scoring enigma is blossoming into mental block
status. The Huskies attacks weren't elegant, but they should have put a few
more by the quick reactions of St Lawrence netminder Caryn Ungewitter.

St Lawrence is developing well. They need to raise the level of their skating
skills. The Saints have a good checking scheme and their transition game is
coming. The striking pair of Kirnan and Caroline Trudeau looked extremely
good. They have a good understanding of each other and move effectively.
Kirnan was exceptionally energetic and was definitely SLU's mover and shaker.
Stacy Boudrias and fresher Trisha Powers also pulled off some marvelous 1-2's.
On the blue line first-year Briden Keay was intelligent. Her one-on-one
coverage and breakout passes were refined. In goal, Ungewitter had a strong
match. Her rapid pads and glove kept her team in this one. Overall, St
Lawrence shows signs of improvement.

"They were stupid enough to [play loud pop music], and unfortunate enough
to [think that was a plus]."
