i've been to two arizona icecats games this year, and they are a lot of
fun. the tucson convention center got over 3000 fans for stanford and i
think i heard over 5000 last saturday against colorado. the atmosphere
reminds me of the old muskegon lumberjacks (ihl) games i used to attend
when i was a kid.

the icecats have similar support. the program is packed with ads (not
much other content, really), and the fans get pretty loud. they're very
supportive of their hometown hockey heroes.

as for the hockey, let's just say that neither stanford nor colorado
really matched up well with arizona. arizona seems (so far) like a
pretty deep team, with lots of players from illinois. they play a
pretty physical game, and they have some players who can put the puck in
the net. there's a reason they've been in the acha top ten for the past
few years.

i'm anxious to see what happens when rhode island rolls into town this
weekend, and illinois next weekend, but it should be fun.

i'm checking out the asu-rhode island game tonight. asu doesn't have
quite as much money (in fact, they play on an ice surface with a big
bump by the visitor's bench), but they get some other pretty good acha
teams down here. last year i saw michigan-dearborn and iowa state beat
asu, though both were decent games.

maybe more on the game tomorrow...

: the fans were happy, and I know of many NCAA Div. III schools who would
: kill for that type of atmosphere. If you have the opportunity to go
: to some ACHA games at the top schools (PSU, Ohio U., Arizona, Eastern
: Michigan, etc.) then I would recommend it. (It doesn't hurt if you can
: combine it with tailgating with 96,000 others at a football game the
: next day, either.)
