I think I know what Bryan is talking about.
Ok, first things first. I'd hardly call Mr. Talafous a poor
choice. Obviously they thought he was the best choice and it will be
interesting to see what he can do at UAA. I think he's an extremely smart
and talented coach who knows the game not only as a coach, but also as a
player. He knows he has a system and he sticks to it. It'll be
interesting to see what program he goes with at UAA
Now, on to the heart and soul of Mr. Malcolm's comments. There is
a hint of truth in what he said. There are a number of former River Falls
players that are on Stout's team. I'd hardly call it the entire team
though. I know of a handful of players that are from River Falls that play
at Stout. The players that have played there just didn't make the grade at
River Falls. Call it what you want, but Talafous believes in going with
the best possible players at all times. If that means certain individuals
"ride the pine" then so be it. That just means they have to work harder to
get the coaches recognition. Not a bad idea if you ask me. Why sacrifice
the quality of the program just to give someone ice time?
It's not like I don't know both sides, I've been friends with these
kids that have gone to Stout or elsewhere and it sucks for them. They make
friends here, a life here in River Falls and then they have to leave. But,
River Falls is not the only team and Talafous is not the only coach. It
happens all over. Just ask one of our former stars, Russ Johnson. He went
to UMD for 2 yrs, got sick of not seeing any ice and came here. I'm sure
they told him some of the same things that Talafous says.
I agree with Mr. Longdin, Stout should be happy that they don't
have to face the wrath of Mr. Talafous next season. It's going to be a
rude awakening the way it is for the BlueDevils, the absence of Dean will
make it a little easier for Stout.
