I'll have time later today to type in the box score from the game and give a
few comments then.

Here is the writeup from the Daily.

Headline: Two Gophers bid Mariucci farewell

It wasn't the way Gophers hockey players Justin McHugh and Jeff
Callinan wanted the game to end, but their West All-Stars lost 6-2 to
the East in Sunday's Shrine East-West College All-Star Hockey Classic
at Mariucci Arena.

Callinan was hampered by poor defense in front of him and gave up
four first-period goals. The East jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never
trailed in the game.

"I didn't really get caught up in that," Callinan said. "It wasn't
the way I wanted it to end up, but I'm not going to dwell on that."

Gophers coach Doug Woog, who coached the West team, said many of the
defensemen were looking to show off their offensive skills for the
NHL scouts in attendance and didn't concentrate as much on defense.
"A lot of those guys haven't even crossed the (center ice) red line
before," Woog said. "A few of them were uptown when they should have
been downtown."

Yale's Andy Weidenbach scored two goals to lead the East. New
Hampshire's Eric Flinton had a goal and two assists.

The West's scoring came courtesy of two Minnesota products. St. Cloud
State's Kelly Hultgren, a Bloomington native, and Lake Superior
State's Brad Willner, a Richfield native, had the West goals. Both
players had many followers at the game.

But the biggest cheers came for Callinan and McHugh, who had the
pleasure of playing their final college hockey games in their home
arena.

"I think if they would have played this somewhere else it wouldn't
have been quite as special," Callinan said. "It was kind of a last
hurrah for McHugh and I."

The two, who played high school hockey together for two years at
Minnetonka High School, expressed pride in wearing their home state's
jersey.

"It was great to play somewhere where you had the support from family
and fans," McHugh said. "I was proud to wear the `M'. I can honestly
say I gave it my best shot. Whether it worked out or not, I cherish
the memories."

Callinan, who was the WCHA's top goaltender this season, said the
program helped him tremendously in advancing to that level by his
senior year.

"I look at it as a great honor to play here," he said. "They do
everything to help you along as a person and a player. I can't say
enough about this program."

For the 42 college seniors who laced up their skates Sunday, it was a
chance to play with and against the country's best hockey players.
That was especially the case for the 11 Division III players, who had
not played against the same caliber of talent as their Division I
counterparts.

"It seems so much easier for (the Division I players)," said Charlie
Gaffney, a Bowdoin College (Maine) senior who was the nation's best
player in Division III, "Every time I turned around to take a pass,
the puck was right on my stick."

Many of the players are looking ahead to bright futures in the NHL.
Callinan's draft rights are held by St. Louis, while McHugh is
undrafted. Both expressed the desire to continue playing, whether in
this country or in Europe.

Gopher notes: Weidenbach was selected as the East team's most
valuable player. Michigan State goalie Mike Buzak, who shut out the
East in the second period, was the West MVP.
