As an official, you should never have to put up with any sort of
physical abuse. A player who takes a swing at you should be assesed a
gross misconduct which usually carries with it a lengthy suspension.
In one of the leagues I ref in (a men's recreational league), the
suspension is five years.
A bench clearing brawl is not grounds to declare a forfeit. The first
person over the boards should be tossed from the game and misconducts
handed out to up to five players per side. If it is close to the end
of the first or second period, I'd end the period to give the players
a chance to cool off, playing the remaining time at the beginning of
the next period. Depending on the level of the game, if it is close
to the end of the game with one team clearly winning, I'd end the game
right then.

601(g) If any player is guilty of any of the following, he shall be
assessed a gross misconduct penalty:
1) Deliberately inflicting physical harm to a game official
in any manner or attempting to do so.
2) Deliberately injuring an opposing Team Official in any
manner or attempting to do so.
3) Behaving in any manner which is critically detrimental to
the conducting of the game, including spitting at an
opponent, spectator, game or team official, or verbally
threatening a Game Official with physical harm.
Rule 625. Leaving the Player's Bench or Penalty Bench
a) No player may leave the players' bench or penalty bench at any
time during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an
altercation . Substitutions made prior to the altercation shall
not be penalized under this rule provided the players so
substituting do not enter the altercation .
b) For violation of this rule, a double minor penalty plus a game
misconduct shall be imposed on the player who was first to leave
the players' bench or penalty bench during an altercation . If
players of both teams leave their respective benches at the same
time, the first identifiable player of each team to do so shall
incur a double minor penalty plus a game misconduct .
c) Any player (other than those dealt with under subsection (b)
hereof) who leaves his players' bench during an altercation and
is assessed a minor , major or misconduct penalty for his
actions, shall also incur an automatic game misconduct penalty.
d) A player (other than those dealt with under subsections (b) &
(c) hereof) who leaves his players' bench during an altercation ,
shall be subject to a misconduct penalty up to a maximum of five
players per team as designated by the Referee .
e) For the purpose of determining which player was first to leave
his players' bench during an altercation , the Referee may
consult with the Linesmen or Off-Ice Officials.
637 (d) If any unusual delay occurs in the first or second periods, the
Referee may order the next regular intermission to be taken
immediately and the balance of the period will be completed on
the resumption of play with the teams defending the same goals,
after which the teams will change ends and resume play of the
ensuing period without delay.
