Hi hockey folks-
I just returned from the game between the touring Russian team Yaroslavl
Torpedo and Dartmouth. It was quite an exhibition. Dartmouth lost 7-4.
Torpedo was one of the most skilled teams I have seen in terms of puck
control and passing - especially in traffic. They were usually able to move
the puck around and wait for the perfect shot.
Torpedo was also quite fast, but Dartmouth did manage to skate with them most
of the game. It was their ability to handle the puck so quickly and
accurately that made Torpedo so strong. Interestingly, Dartmouth was 3 for 6
on the powerplay, which helped make the score respectable (Torpedo was 0 for
2). It seemed Dartmouth had its best opportunities when they played a little
more physically. Torpedo had some difficulty dealing with the physical play,
which seemed to throw off their timing a bit. Because of their speed and puck
handling, however, it was often difficult to play a strong physical style
against them.
If you have an opportunity to see Torpedo play, you should do so. It will be
quite enjoyable.
