I find that state officials often don't even bother checking the lyrics to
a song before advocating its adoption as an anthem. Not too long ago, a
state senator in New Jersey tried to have "Born to Run" adopted as a state
song simply because Bruce Springsteen is from NJ - disregarding the fact
that the lyrics include such lovely sentiments as "baby, this town rips the
bones from your back/it's a death-trap, it's a suicide rap/we gotta get out
while we're young".

ObHoCo (well, sort of): Cornell also uses the same tune as "O Tannenbaum"
for one of its songs - "The Evening Song." But I've never heard it sung
anywhere near a hockey game.

And as for national anthems - I know people have strong opinions about it.
But if you don't want the Canadian anthem sung at your school, that's fine,
don't sing the Canadian anthem at your school - as long as you let other
schools sing whatever they choose to sing at their own games. Seems to me
there something ironic about that in terms of freedom of speech...
