According to WKXZ Radio, Colgate head coach Don Vaughan announced
today that senior backup goalie Matt Weder and first-year defensemen
Ryan Faubert and Mark Holdridge have been suspended "indefinitely"
for unspecified violations of team rules.
Weder, a talented if inconsistant goalkeeper, is the biggest loss
for the team. While he has seen only 10-11 starts in the past
year and a half, his large size and drop-down style prevented
opponents from preparing only for usual starter Dan Brenzavich.
Weder also gave Vaughan a strong backup in case of
injury, always a concern as Brenzavich's size makes him a target
of some opponents. Thaddeus Taylor-O'Neill, a sophomore walk-on
with no collegiate game experience, will serve as backup during
Weder's suspension.
While the Faubert and Holdridge suspensions leave the Red Raiders
with only 7 defensemen, all are healthy and 6 have played regularly
for two or more years. In a pinch, several defensive
forwards could move back, and with the return this week of Jed
Whitchurch all forward positions are at least five players deep.
