The NCAA tournament doesn't mean much in terms of determining which
conference is best. You have to remember the tournament's a single-
elimination affair. When Maine won the national title in 1993, there
was little doubt it was the best team. If Maine had lost,that
would not have meant it wasn't the best team. And when you're talking
about an entire conference, tournament play still doesn't show much.
 
As others have said, there is a whole slew of factors: all players,
all coaches, officiating even. There are some things statistics
can't show. While it's true that debating which conference is best
makes for good fodder, there is no answer to the question. But who
cares, anyway? I certainly don't!
