        One item: the Stanford logo contains a eucalyptus tree rather than
a redwood tree (I believe).  Leland Stanford, Sr. (the father of Leland, Jr.,
after whom the university is named) was a Major Player in the railroad
business.  He drove (or helped drive) the famous gold spike that linked the
East and West Coasts by RR.  He had the bright idea of importing fast-growing
eucalyptus trees from Australia to California for railroad ties.  Alas, the
wood turned out to be too soft.  The trees, however, basically "took over"
California ...
