ATTENDEES
A big thank you to Eileen Broderick, MASL President; Sonja Plummer
Morgan, Immediate Past President MLA; Joyce Rumery, Dean of Libraries at
UM and Vice Chair of the Maine Library Commission; and David Nutty,
Library Director at USM and Chair of the Maine InfoNet Board for helping
me represent Maine at ALA National Library Legislative Day.
This group had a great meeting with Congressman Michaud and valuable
meetings with key staffers from the other Maine Congressional offices.
Senator Collins' Postal Bill was before the Senate during our
appointment time which tied up both Senators.
FEDERAL ISSUES
Some of the issues discussed were:
Support for school libraries through E.S.E.A.,
Continued support for LSTA and E-rate (Maine schools and libraries
collected, more than $62,000,000 from the federal E-rate program from
2001-2010!),
Cybersecurity and Surveillance, and
Open Access to tax-funded research
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT LEGISLATIVE DAY
More than 350 librarians and library supporters from across the country
met in Washington, D.C. from April 23-24 to meet with members of
Congress to discuss key library issues. This was the American Library
Association's 38th annual National Library Legislative Day.
If you want more detailed information about any of these issues, please
contact me.
Cheers,
Linda
