 The Pierre Balenger Award

For those of us who are fortunate enough (or simply letting them indulge) to
receive Greg Berge and Anne Baseler's "The Big Red What?" hockey digest, in the
"Special Halloween collectors' Edition" of October, 1992, one found that the
1992 Pierre Belanger Award (for the worst ECAC referee) went to John Gallagher.

Last time when folks talked about bad refs in ECAC, I think we pretty much
agreed that Pierre, despite his reputation, called the games fair and square in
the last couple of years. It was also agreed that several other referees were
"competing" to replace Pierre in the ECAC legend, and were doing a damn fine
job of it. :-)

While I do find it amusing that every year the ghost of Pierre's old self rose
to haunt us this time of the year, St. Lawrence University's "bad luck" of
having Pierre for four consecutive games seemed to me as unusually cruel
punishment. SLU must have done something awful during off-season to deserve
this kind of treatment. Then again, it could be worse: SLU could have had
Michael "St. Clueless" St. Louis for four games.

Greg and Anne: Just think, twice as many referees to choose from for the 1993
Belanger Awardee!
