With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, we have a tie for first place between Craig Roberts and
Charlie Shub. The tiebreaker is the number of individual conference
contests won, and since Charlie won a conference contest and Craig did not,
the winner of Contest #2 is:
Charlie Shub
with 60 points. He and Craig edged out the runner-up (me!) by two.
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECAC wound up in a kind-of-ridiculous eight-way tie among Scott Kaplan,
Bill Krebs, Mark Lewin, Charlie Shub, Wayne Smith, Jim Dixon, John Edwards,
and William Sangrey, each of whom had 18 points. The first tiebreaker
whittled the tie down to four (Scott, Bill, Mark, and Charlie), who each
missed the championship game score by one point. Scott Kaplan took the
second tiebreaker, and the crown, as his predicted total goals for the tour-
nament was off by only five.
Hockey East finished with a four-way tie among Robin Lock, CHODR, Mark Lewin,
and Wayne Smith. The first tiebreaker gave the top spot to Robin Lock, as his
predicted score was only off by two points.
Four people also tied for the top spot in the WCHA: Robin Lock, Craig
Roberts, myself, and Sean Keller, with 12 points each. Robin, Craig, and me
remained tied after the first tiebreaker, as we were all two points off in
the championship-game score, but Robin took the second tiebreaker, missing the
total goals scored by only four.
Yet another four-way tie occurred in the NCHC, with Charlie Shub, Sean Keller,
John Edwards, and myself finishing with six points each. Charlie and me both
were one off in our championship-game scores, but I took the second
tiebreaker,
as my predicted total goals was off by 16.
The Atlantic Hockey race featured a more conventional tie between Charlie Shub
and Craig Roberts, each of whom had 14 points. Charlie Shub took the first
tiebreaker and the title, coming one point closer in his predicted
championship
game score.
No tiebreakers were necessary in the Big Ten, as Jim Dixon finished in the top
spot with six points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 5-2) to be 5-0,
you would get two points; if you picked 3-1, you would get three points;
and if you picked 1-0, you would get six points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the ECAC, the championship game score was 5-2 and the total goals
scored in
the tournament was 113.
For Hockey East, the championship game score was 4-0.
For the WCHA, the championship game score was 4-1 and the total goals
scored in
the tournament was 72.
For the NCHC, the championship game score was 4-3, and the total goals
scored in
the tournament was 83.
For Atlantic Hockey, the championship game score was 7-4.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
