With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #1, in which the later rounds
were weighted more than the earlier ones, the overall winner is...
Craig Roberts
whose total of 164 points beat runner-up Scott Kaplan by eight. Congratu-
lations to Craig for his superior prognosticating skills in being able to
see his way to the top spot through the confusing mess of upsets in this
year's conference tournaments -- or, congratulations to Craig for having a
better dart-throwing monkey than the rest of us :-)
As for the individual conference winners...
The top spot in the ECAC went to Jim Dixon with 55 points.
Scott Kaplan repeated as Hockey East champ with 34 points.
My own 44 points were good for first place in the WCHA.
John Edwards and I tied for the top spot in the upset-laden NCHC with
(ahem) 11 points each. I took the title on the first tiebreaker, as my
predicted score was three points closer to the actual result than John's
was.
The Atlantic Hockey race went to Craig Roberts with 40 points.
Jim Dixon topped the Big Ten with 27 points.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 5-2) to be 5-0,
you would get two points; if you picked 3-1, you would get three points;
and if you picked 1-0, you would get six points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the NCHC, the championship game score was 4-3.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win. It should be noted that the USCHO staff did
not pick the games all at once, the way the rest of us did - which was
especially advantageous this year, with all the upsets.
