With the conference post-season tournaments over and the NCAA tournament
almost upon us, it's time to announce the winners of the Pick the
Post-Season Tournament contests. For Contest #2, in which all rounds are
scored the same, we have a three-way tie for first place among Sean Keller,
CHODR, and me. The tiebreaker is the number of individual conference
contests won, but since each of us won one conference contest, there is
still a three-way tie for Contest #2 winner:
Sean Keller, CHODR, and Bill Fenwick
each with 56 points. The three first-place finishers edged out Wayne Smith
by two points. (I'm going to have to come up with a better tiebreaker.
One I can't lose -- I mean, one that makes more sense)
As for the individual conference winners...
The ECAC race ended in a five-way tie among Wayne Smith, Andy Weise,
William Sangrey, Mark Lewin, and Nathan Hampton, each with 14 points.
Wayne and Andy remained tied after the first tiebreaker, each missing the
championship game score by one point, but Wayne took the second tiebreaker,
coming closer to the total number of goals scored in the conference
tournament.
Scott Kaplan's 14 points were good for first place in Hockey East.
The CCHA crown went to me with 14 points.
The magic number in the WCHA was also 14 points, enough to give Sean Keller
the win.
CHODR's 14 points (see a pattern here?) took the top spot in Atlantic Hockey.
Complete scoring results are below. Congratulations to all the winners,
and thanks again to all those who participated.
Tiebreaker notes: The first tiebreaker was the difference between your
predicted championship-game score and the actual score. Thus, if you
picked the score of the ECAC championship game (actually 3-1) to be 5-1,
you would get two points; if you picked 1-0, you would get three points;
and if you picked 5-4, you would get five points. Obviously, the lower the
point score the better.
The second tiebreaker was the difference between your predicted total of
goals scored in the entire tournament and the actual number. Again, the
lower the point total the better.
As far as tiebreakers that were actually needed:
For the ECAC, the championship game score was 3-1, and the total number of
goals scored in the tournament was 123.
The USCHO prognosticators' numbers are included below, as are the "Higher
Seed" picks showing what would have happened if the higher seed for each
game had been picked to win.
