HOCKEY FALLS TO WESLEYAN, 5-2

NEW BEDFORD, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's hockey team lost to visiting Wesleyan, 5-2, in a non-conference game at the Stephan Hetland Memorial Ice Arena Tuesday evening.

The Cardinals scored the first four goals of the game en route to the victory.

Wesleyan junior forward Adam Kaiser (Stony Point, NY/Hotchkiss School) scored at 6:04 of the opening period, as Corsair goal Ryan William (Milton, ON/Huntsville Otters-OPJHL) was screened in front and the puck slid by on the glove side, Cardinal senior forward Tom Salah (Gloucester, MA/Northwood School NY) and junior forward Nick Craven (Fort Collins, CO/Phillips Academy MA) assisted on the goal. Wesleyan would take a 2-0 lead at 14:00 when Salah back-handed home a rebound off the shot of Craven.

The Cardinals pushed the lead to 3-0 at 3:05 of the second period when sophomore forward Keith Buehler (Skaneateles, NY/Proctor Academy NH) scored off a nice feed from junior forward Donald Kleckner (Alpharetta, GA/Lawrenceville School NJ). Wesleyan would swell the lead to 4-0, as freshman forward James Albrecht (Commerce Township, MI/Geneva Community High School) scored at 12:12, assisted by junior forward Ryan White (Grand Island, NY/Saint Josephs Collegiate Institute). The Corsairs would get on the scoreboard just ten seconds later, scoring a power play goal. Sophomore defenseman Nate Dupere (Fall River, MA/Hebron Academy) beat Cardinal junior goalie Glen Stowell (Hadley, MA/Phillips Academy) assisted by senior forward Mike Owens (South Boston, MA/Boston Jr Bulldogs-AJHL) cutting the deficit to 4-1.

Both teams traded goals in the third period. UMD junior forward William Colclough (Naples, FL/Peoria Mustangs-CSHL) cut the deficit in half when he stuffed home the rebound of freshman defenseman Steve Ginand (Milford, MA/Northern Cyclones-AJHL) making it 4-2 at 11:17. The Cardinals capped the scoring at 14:33. Sophomore forward Tommy Hartnett (Bronxville, NY/Canterbury School CT) finished off a flurry in front of the net assisted by sophomore forward Nik Tasiopoulos (Norwell, MA/Proctor Academy NH).

"Wesleyan is a very quick explosive team," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli. "The power play goals aside I thought we played pretty well considering we are pretty beat up with injury.”

The Corsairs were outshot by the Cardinals, 44-34. Williams made 39 saves for UMD, while Stowell made 32 saves for Wesleyan.
The Corsairs dropped to 2-2-1 with the defeat, while the Cardinals improved to 2-1-0 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Connecticut College Saturday. Wesleyan will host Wentworth Saturday.
