NEW ENGLAND HOCKEY WRITERS ECAC NORTHEAST ALL-STARS ANNOUNCED
(UMass Dartmouth Places Three on Team; Helgesson, Rolli Named MVP, Coach of the Year)

BOSTON, Massachusetts – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth hockey team posted a 25-5 record, won its first ECAC Northeast Championship since 1998, and won the conference’s first game in the NCAA Division III Tournament, and today three of the Corsairs have been honored as members of the 2006 New England Hockey Writers ECAC Northeast All-Star Team. Additionally, UMass Dartmouth Head Coach John Rolli has been named the coach of the year, while Plymouth State sophomore netminder Karl Helgesson (Lerum, SWEDEN) was named the most valuable player. The team was announced today after a vote of league head coaches and an esteemed panel of local media members.

The two goaltenders on this year’s team are Helgesson and UMass Dartmouth freshman Jon Dryjowicz-Burek (Ludlow, Mass.). Helgesson, who earned ECAC Northeast Player and Goaltender of the Year honors, played in 24 games for the 16-9-1 Panthers, posting a .919 save percentage and a 2.88 goals against average to go along with a 15-8-1 record and a pair of shutouts. As a rookie, Dryowicz-Burek played in 23 of UMass Dartmouth’s 30 games, posting a 17-5 record with 1.73 goals against average, a .941 save percentage, and three shutouts and earned ECAC Northeast Second Team and Co-Rookie of the Year honors.

The blueline corps consists of Wentworth Institute of Technology senior Blayne Goodman (Westlock, Alberta), Nichols freshman Jeff Bieber (Littleton, Col.), senior Lucas Irwin (Burnsville, Minn.) from Curry, and Fitchburg State junior Dave Kaloustian (Marlboro, Mass.). Goodman leaves the Leopard program as the all-time leader in points by a defenseman (86) and was an ECAC Northeast All-League selection all four years, including earning first team honors this past season when he scored eight goals and 17 assists for 25 points. Beiber, a Second Team All-ECAC Northeast selection, helped lead the Bison to a fourth-place finish in the ECAC Northeast, playing in all 27 of Nichols’ games and scoring nine goals and assisting on 19 others for 28 points. Irwin, a transfer from Providence College and First Team All-ECAC Northeast selection, played in all 28 of the Colonels’ games, scoring eight goals and assisting on 13 others for 21 points. Four of his eight goals came on special teams. Kaloustian, an Honorable Mention All-ECAC Northeast selection, played in all 26 of the Falcons’ games, scoring three goals – all on the power play – and had 14 helpers for 17 points.

Up front, the team consists of UMass Dartmouth senior Eric Frank (Waltham, Mass.) and junior Kyle McCullough (Danvers, Mass.), as well as Curry junior George Cademartori (Warrenville, Ill.), Johnson & Wales sophomore Matt McGilvary (Rochester, N.H.), Nichols freshman Anthony Monte (Chicago, Ill.), and Plymouth State junior Goose LaCroix (Moretown, Vt.). Frank, the MVP of this team a season ago, played in 28 of UMass Dartmouth’s 30 games, netting 42 points on 20 goals and 22 assists. Five of his goals were game-winners, en route to being named Second Team All-ECAC Northeast. McCullough played in all 30 of the Corsairs games and was named First Team All-ECAC Northeast after leading the team in scoring with 46 points (24 goals, 22 assists). Thirteen of his 24 goals came on special teams, including nine on the power play. Cademartori helped the Colonels to a second-place finish in the league, after playing in 27 of the team’s 28 games and scoring 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points. He was named First Team All-ECAC Northeast as well. McGilvary played in all 26 of the Wildcats’ games, scoring 15 goals and 13 assists for a team-high 28 points. Ten of his 15 goals came on the power play and he earned First Team All-ECAC Northeast honors. LaCroix earned Second Team All-ECAC Northeast honors after tying for the team lead with 18 goals scored and adding 15 assists for 33 points. Four of his goals were game-winners. Monte, the ECAC Northeast Co-Rookie of the Year and a Second Team All-ECAC Northeast selection, led the Bison in scoring, netting 23 goals and 19 assists for 42 points
