Sixth-Ranked Providence Falls To 12th ranked Nebraska-Omaha, 4-3 In Overtime

        OMAHA, NEBRASKA. --  The sixth-ranked Providence College men's ice hockey
team lost its second straight game to start the 2001-2002 season.  The
Friars fell to 12th-ranked Nebraska-Omaha, 4-3 in overtime at the Maverick
Stampede in the consolation game on Saturday, October 13.
        In the first period, Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to a 2-0 lead.  Jeff Hoggan
scored his first goal of the season 3:21 into the game on a power play.  The
goal was a slap shot from the left side of the ice, just above the circle,
and was assisted by David Brisson and Aaron Smith.  Chris Claffey connected
for the second Maverick goal at the 9:52 mark on another hard shot from just
within the right circle.  It was assisted by Nick Fohr.  Both teams were
even with 13 shot attempts in the period.
        In the second period, the Friars held the Mavericks scoreless and were able
to tie the score, 2-2.  Junior Mike Lucci (Parma, Ohio) scored his first
goal of the season on a two-on-two, breakaway led off by goalkeeper Nolan
Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan) at the 2:17 mark.  Schaefer cleared
the puck wide left on the Providence powerplay to sophomore Regan Kelly
(Imperial, Saskatchewan), who fed it to Lucci.  Junior All-American Devin
Rask (Parkside, Saskatchewan) tied the game at 6:57 on a short-handed goal
as he lifted the puck into the upper left hand corner of the net.  He scored
off a pass from senior line-mate Drew Omicioli (Warwick, R.I.).  He also was
assisted by freshman Eric Lundberg (Vernon, Conn.).  Both teams finished the
period with nine shots each, and remained even on shots for the game, 22-22.
        In the third period, the Friars took their first lead of the game at 8:59
on a goal by senior Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.).  The goal, Fregoe's first
of the season, was lifted into the upper right hand corner of the net  and
was assisted by Omicioli.  It was Omicioli's second assist of the game.
        The Mavericks tied the score, 3-3, with 15:28 on the clock.  Fohr tallied
the goal in the midst of a scramble in front of the net.  He was assisted by
Zach Scribner and Joe Pereira.  The goal proved to be the equalizing factor
in forcing the five-minute overtime period .  At the end of regulation the
Mavericks held the advantage in shots, 34-30.
        In the overtime period, the Mavericks took the win with 55.3 seconds
remaining in the five-minute session.   Greg Zanon was credited with the
goal as he was left alone, 15-yards away from the keeper on the right side.
The game winner was assisted by Brisson and Hoggan.
        Providence falls to 0-2-1 on the season.  They will return home to
Schneider Arena to face Sacred Heart at 7:00 on Friday, October 19.
