Both Alaska schools fly commercial airlines to their away games (even
against each other, as the schools are 350 road miles apart). Arrangements
are made by competitively selected local travel agencies, who are selected
based upon the largest discount offered to each school off the airlines'
published fares, among other criteria. It would be my guess that both UAF
and UAA rank at the top of the Div. I hockey travel expenditure list,
especially since both schools also provide financial support for their
opponents to travel north.

Of course, hockey is the flagship program at both campuses. Basketball
ranks a distant second, even figuring in UAA's Great Alaska Shootout, based
on attendance. All other sports are low-travel cost due to small team sizes
and equipment needs (e.g. volleyball, rifle, gymnastics, swimming, etc.)
Due in large part to aggressive marketing and booster club support, I think
both schools' hockey programs enjoy relative financial health in non-travel
areas. Now that both schools are conference members, major equipment
sponsors (Bauer, CCM) help defray costs through in-kind contributions.

Probably more than you wanted to know...
Mark
