The big news is the injury to Wisconsin Goaltending start Duane Derksen.
There is no more news on his injury than what Rich already reported:
there was some tendon damage, and they don't know if he will be able to
return this season (it depends what they have to do to protect his
wrist). The good news is that the injury isn't more serious.

The other news for the Badgers is that they found some scoring punch,
which has been missing for some time, and scored two powerplay goals,
which they haven't done in 30-some attempts.

The game was kinda strange. It was very very slow, with lots of stopping
and starting, for penalities, offsides, pucks in the crowd, etc. Also,
referree Brian Ricci didn't do anything to speed things up... lots of
slow line changes and then futzing around the faceoff circle.
This is very subjective, but the crowd did not react as I would have
expected for a high scoring game -- they seemed a bit dead, but came
alive at times. Maybe it was just me, since I was very tired before the
game even began...

North Dakota was just flat, and Jones had a bad first period in the
nets. Wisconsin got four goals, of which two should have been stopped,
but fortunatly for the Badgers, werent. Wisconsin got the good bounce on
their shots, something they've been missing for a while.

In the middle of the first period, North Dakota was starting to get some
sustained pressure, when Wisconsin had a rush back up the ice. A good
shot ended up just to the side of the net, and as Wisconsin fought for
the puck, A North Dakota player cross-checked a Badger from behind. The
resulting melee put 3 players from each side in the box, and broke North
Dakota's momemtum.

Wisconsin's third goal was protested a bit by North Dakota Coach Gino
Gasparini, claiming that Doug Macdonald was offsides. None of the
players on the ice protested, and from the stands I thought it looked
close. The replay didn't show enough to tell.

Early in the second period, on a North Dakota powerplay, badger
netminder Duane Derksen reached to cover the puck with his blocker hand.
North Dakota's Justin Duberman, charging the net for the rebound, slid
past the net, and his skate got caught under his blocker, cutting
Derksen on the back of his wrist. Duberman seemed almost as upset as
Derksen, and it was a clean play. Derksen went to the dressing room,
and backup Jon Michelizzi came in. He looked a little nervous, but made
the first save, and he and the penalty killers held off the North Dakota
powerplay.

The team really gave Michelizze support, as did the crowd. In the third
period, he make a nice glove save on North Dakota's Greg Johnson,
getting a standing ovation from the fans.

North Dakota and Wisconsin do not like each other. There were a number
of furious melees last night, all but one resulting in matching
penalties. However, after the initial fury, all of them seemed to calm
down quickly -- by the time the linesmen came racing back from
delivering the first pair from the box, most of the other players where
just holding each other, like they didn't really want to do anything. I
don't know if it was restraint on the Badgers' part (they have not been
known for controlling their temper this season), lack of emotion on the
part of the Souix, or what. Anyway, no one got thrown out, and no one
got into anythign serious. Ricchi didn't make any tough calls, and
didn't seem to have any impact on the game, positive or negative.

Notes:

With the two points, Wisconsin is assured of home ice for the WCHA
playoffs. They remain one point behind Northern Michigan, who ends their
season tonight. Wisconsin has two more games, hosting St. Cloud next
weekend.

The backup goalie to Michelizzi last night would have been forward Bret
Kurtz. Sophomore Jeff Althus will be the backup tonight.

Wisconsin was assesed a timeout to warm up Michelizzi when Derksen was
hurt. I was under the impression that a goalie coming in because of an
injury got a warm up without a timeout being charged.

I have tickets to tonights game. It will be interesting to see --
everyone expects a much different North Dakota team tonight, and the
Badgers come in knowing the Michelizzi will start.
