Summary:

Princeton beat Union at Achilles Friday night, 4-1. There was very
little 5-on-5 hockey, as 36 penalties were handed out for a total of
96 minutes.

The game opened, of course, with a quick penalty on Union. But the
Tigers were sloppy on the power play, and never really got it going.
Soon after killing the first penalty, Union went on the penalty kill
again. This time, Princeton was much more successful, and only some
good work by Luigi Villa in goal kept Princeton off the board.
Princeton was finally able to score at 9:04, when Brian Bigelow fired
a shot past Villa from the top of the right faceoff circle. Just 5
seconds later, Union got their first power play chance. They had a
few good chances, but were stopped by Tiger goaltender Craig Fiander.

Union started the second period (of course) killing a penalty. That
one ended, so it must be time to call another. This time Bill McKenna
went off for Union. The Dutchmen were doing an excellent job killing
the penalty, but Kampersal beat Villa from the blue line to open up a
2-goal lead at 3:12. There would be no more scoring in the period,
but both teams would have their chances. 14 penalties, resulting in 9
power plays were handed out in the period. Craig Ferrero played an
outstanding period, both on the power play and killing penalties.
Ferrero, Jayson Flowers, Dalton Menhall, and Rick Clifford all had
great chances, but none went in. Princeton had their share of missed
opportunities too. For example, on a power play, Princeton had Villa
down on the ice and out of the play. Villa just had his glove
sticking out, but he was taken out of the play. Bigelow had half of
the net to shoot at, but put it right into Villa's glove.

Again, Union started the 3rd period a man down. Again, they
successfully killed the penalty. But with the teams skating 4-on-4,
Union's Bill McKenna gave up the puck breaking into Princeton's zone.
Zilinskas took it in 2-on-1 and beat Villa for a 3-0 lead. The game
was delayed at 7:53 of the third when a piece of glass broke in the
Union zone. It was over 20 minutes before the glass was cleaned and a
new piece was cut and put in. The second half of the third period was
all Union, except for a shorthanded breakaway goal by Andre Faust.
Union finally got on the board on Bill Railton's goal with the
Dutchmen up 5-on-3. Union had more great scoring chances at the end
of the game, but could not get another one past Fiander.

Referee Mike Noeth was just calling too many penalties. Some of the
calls were clear penalties that had to be called, but others could
have, and should have, been let go. The calls didn't really favor
either team, but constantly being on special teams kept both teams
from getting any real momentum going. Union's penalty kill is much
improved. After killing 8 of 9 Cornell penalties last weekend, they
killed 9 of 10 against Princeton. Princeton killed 8 of 9 Union power
plays on the night, with the only goal coming on a 5-on-3.

Princeton is 8-12-1 in the ECAC, good for 9th place, 10-13-1 overall.
Union is 2-18-1 in the ECAC, 3-20-1 overall. This loss, combined with
Dartmouth's win over Cornell, guarantees that the Dutchmen will finish
12th in their first ECAC season.

Union notes:

- Railton's goal gives him 99 points on the season. He needs one to
become the 13th member of Union's Century Club. Dalton Menhall has 94
career points.

- Two awards were presented before the game:
  - The Thomas Van Arden Dukehart Award for the player with the
highest grade-point average went to Senior goalie Shayne White
for the second straight year. Shayne is a Computer Science major.
He will be making his first start of the season against Yale
    tonight for Senior Appreciation Night.
  - The Charles Morrison Scholarship Award was presented to junior
    defenseman Greg Eccleston.
