St. Cloud State Defeats Sacred Heart

St. Cloud, Minn. -- The St. Cloud State University women's hockey team
set two team records during a strong 5-0 win over non-conference rival
Sacred Heart on Nov. 22, at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. The
victory moves SCSU's record to 6-6-1 overall and pushed Sacred Heart, a
Division III program from Connecticut, to 1-3 overall. This is the best
12-game start for the Huskies in team history.
SCSU dominated the game from start to finish as the Huskies set a new
team record with 24 shots during the second period. The old record of 22
shots on goal in one period was set previously hit twice during games
against St. Ben's on Nov. 16, 1999 and Wisconsin-Superior on Nov. 18, 1999.
At the same time, SCSU limited Sacred Heart to just two second period shots
- which tied the team record of two shots in a period set on Feb. 8, 2000
vs. St. Mary's and Nov. 16 vs. St. Ben's.
SCSU first year defender Kobi Kawamoto got the ball rolling with her
seventh goal of the season at 12:25 of the first with assists from Abby
Cooper and Ricki-Lee Doyle. Jenny Jones tallied at 17:46 of the first with
an assist from Alison Ribar, her first point as a Husky.
In the second, Fiona McLeod scored at 15:55 with an assist from Jones.
Ribar hit her first collegiate goal at 17:12 with an assist from McLeod and
Kirsten Olson completed the scoring at 17:35 with an assist from Ribar and
McLeod.
As a team, SCSU outshot the Pioneers 56-11 and fell just one shot on
goal short of the team record of 57 vs. St. Ben's on Nov. 16, 1999.
In the nets, Ellen Brinkman notched her first collegiate shutout with 11
saves. The Huskies will continue their season on Dec. 1, with a 7:05 pm
home match against Princeton.
