Lucia Names Gophers Assistant Along With Bringing Along One From Colorado
College
MINNEAPOLIS, Posted 10:45 a.m. April 23, 1999 -- Minnesota men's hockey
coach Don Lucia on Thursday named Mike Guentzel and John Hill as assistant
coaches.
Guentzel, who was also a candidate for the head coaching position, served a
similar role under former coach Doug Woog for the past five seasons. Hill
comes to Minnesota after a four-year stint as an assistant to Lucia at
Colorado College. He also assisted the WCHA all-star team that competed in
Switzerland last August.
Guentzel was a defenseman for the Golden Gophers from 1982-85 and a captain
on the 1984-85 squad. He graduated in 1987 and then served as assistant
coach, head coach and general manager of the U.S. Hockey League's St. Paul
Vulcans for seven seasons.
He had a brief professional career with Salt Lake City of the International
Hockey League and New Haven of the American Hockey League.
Hill was previously an assistant at Alaska-Anchorage (1991-95), where he
also scored 121 career points in his four-year playing career and captained
the Seawolves' 1983-84 squad. [note from the tongue in IR's cheek: Hey! This
guy ain't from Min-NE-so-TAH? Shoot, there goes the neighborhood...]
Lucia was named to replace Woog earlier this month.
