Guest lecturing my sociology of sports class today ws Dick
Schultz, the former executive director of the NCAA. After class I asked
him about what he sees in college hockey's future.
He commentd that college hockey has to follow in the NHL's
footsteps. It has to shed it's regional-interest label to be widely
successful. Incouraging southern schools to add teams is big. He
suggested waiting until the new southern NHL franchises have had a few
years, seeing which areas become the most interested and hoping that some
local schools will add a program. If the Ducks take off, maybe that'll
cause interest at someplace like UCLA or USC. Schools that do have big
bucks available.
He also suggested more prolific TV coverage, but was completely
unaware of the Maine-Michigan glitches. He did speculate that the NCAA will
likely have a few words with ESPN when the contract is up for renewal though.
