"Same league schedule" is a leap of faith, but not reality.  Look at the
number of times MN and CC played UAA and NMU.  *Before* the tournament,
CC had 2 more games with each team than did MN.
 
RPI looks at all games equally.
 
It is true that in a straight playoff scheme, the RPI of the leader will
suffer somewhat compared to others.  This is one good reason for not
having everyone participate or having brackets or having play-in games.
 
But the effect is not as significant as you would imagine ...  unless,
of course, the #1 seed loses and doesn't get to play the better teams.
