Black Bears look to boost scoring punch
by Larry Mahoney of the NEWS Staff

The University of Maine hockey team averaged only 3.94 goals on 33.7
shots per game this past season.

So the recruiting emphasis was on scoring punch, and two of the 1994-95
newcomers who could fill that void are Danny Bousquet and Shawn
Wansborough.

Bousquet and Wansborough headline a class that also includes 16-year-old
forward Tony Tempestilli, defensemen Brian White and Jeff Foster, who
have all signed national letter of intent, and Swedish forward Marcus
Gustafsson, a recruited walk-on.

The players' eligibility is dependent upon approval by the NCAA
clearinghouse and, in a couple of cases, the players' ability to pass
the SATs.

Maine will also benefit from the return of 1994 U.S. Olympic Team
defenseman Chris Imes; defenseman Jeff Tory, who was ruled ineligible
after playing three games for Maine; and left winger Jamie Thompson,
who played 16 games for Maine two years ago but left for academic
reasons and had 31 goals and 42 assists in 49 games (including playoffs)
for the Omaha Lancers in the U.S. Junior Hockey League this past
season.

The Ferraro twins, U.S. Olympian Peter and near-Olympian Chris, may
also be back.

"The area we had to improve was the goal-scoring and a couple of these
guys might be big factors in that area," said Maine coach Shawn Walsh.
"We're happy with this class."

Montreal's Bousquet, a 5-foot-11, 150-pounder, registered 76 goals and
76 assists in 58 games for Penticton of the British Columbia Junior
Hockey League. He was chosen the MVP in the Interior Division. His 32
power-play goals broke Brett Hull's previous league record of 31.

"Dany has great hands and great hand-eye coordination," said Penticton
Coach-General Manager Garry Davidson. "He's a magician with the puck
and is very talented in and around the net. He's also very strong on
his skates and isn't scared to bang into people."

Maine assistant Grant Standbrook said, "Dany could stand nose-to-nose
with a goalie and roof the puck on him."

The 5-10, 182-pound Wansborough, a native of Deseronto, Ontario, had 49
goals, 54 assists and 224 penalty minutes in 51 games for the Smith
Falls Bears in the Central Ontario Junior A Hockey League.

"He was *the* dominant skater in our league," said Smiths Falls General
Manager Jeff MacLean.

"He may have the best balance of any recruit I've seen in years," said
Standbrook. "He revels in the heavy going. He reminds you of (Scott)
Pellerin in the corners and he's also really good at faceoffs.

White, a 6-foot, 195-pounder from Burlington, Mass., tallied 7 goals and
28 assists in 26 games for Class 1A (elite division) runnerup Arlington
Catholic High School. He was chosen to the All-Boston Globe and
All-Boston Herald dream teams.

"Brian has a terrific shot. He's a great hitter and he has good hands
for a big guy," said Arlington Catholic coach and AD Dan Shine.

The 6-2, 175-pound Foster, a native of Napanee, Ontario, had 9 & 47 in
54 games for Smiths Falls and was a second team all-star.

"He's a great athlete who gets the puck out of your end by hook or by
crook," said Standbrook.

Montreal's Tempestilli, a 5-11, 195-pounder, had more than 60 points for
Montreal Bourassa in the Quebec AAA Midget League and was the league's
fifth leading scorer.
