I have to agree with [log in to unmask] about nicknames. I think
that using the name of a Native American tribe as a team nickname is something
that Native Americans should look on with pride. So the Sioux, Seminoles,
Mohawks, etc. shouldn't have a beef with those as nicknames. Using a name
like "Chiefs" isn't derogatory either, though it is stretching it to use a
modifier like "Fighting Sioux". As a name only 'Braves' has a uniquely Indian
(oops, Native American) meaning, the other names discussed: Chief, Warrior,
Raider, etc. are just symbolic names for strong or fierce individuals. Is
Viking non-PC because it has come to symbolize a bearded guy in a horned
helmet that might burn down your village, rather than just a happy Norwegian?
Why aren't there complaints from the Scandinavians about this stereotypical
name? I do feel that the nickname "Redskins" is demeaning, and should be
changed, but most of the other complaints are probably more over the other
logos, mascots, and cheers that degrade the image that the Native Americans
would prefer, and that a change of nickname forces these other things to
change.

I do have a question: Why was Colgate grouped with those having non-PC
nicknames? They are the "Red Raiders". I don't recall them using that in a
Native American context. If I recall they have red uniforms with Colgate
written across them, and no logo. Just adding a color modifier doesn't
necessarily read any extra meaning into the nickname, does it?
