In response to your request for information on the hockey team, they are
clinging to a tie for third place with RPI with Clarkson just a point behind
in the standings. After a fast-paced start, the Red Raiders have been mired
in a 3-3-2 stretch with home-and-home ties coming against a lesser Cornell
team (I'm sure I'll be here remarks about that comment). This weekend they
play at home where they are 4-0-1 against conference foes, against
Dartmouth and Vermont. They are crucial games since they go on the road
next weekend at Harvard and Brown against the top two teams in the league.
About Sophomore goalie Matt Weder, he has clearly outplayed Junior Jason
Gates with a 4-2-1 record and 2.81 avg. (1.95 avg. in the league) compared
to Gates' 5-4-1 4.34 avg. (4.30 avg. in the league). Gates was the star down
the stretch run last year and has the experience, but it's time to give Weder
a chance to be the #1. So far, it has been a revolving door.
Finally, although I haven't seen UVM's freshmen sensations Eric Perrin
and Martin St. Louie (I will Saturday night), I have to give my support to
Colgate's Mike Harder, who leads the team in scoring as a freshmen (13-17-30).
And Senior captain Bruce Gardiner deserves recognition for his outstanding
season. He is currently the second leading scorer in the ECAC conference play.
