The falcons opened up slowly this afternoon yielding a power play goal
2 minutes in and another goal (both from out near the blue line) late
in the period. When the friars opened up a 3 goal bulge, it started
looking like another long afternoon. About midway in the second, the
falcons scoredon a power play and then got another in well under a
minute to close the score to 3-2.

with just under 5 minutes left in the period, falcon forward steve maturo
was slashed and checked into the boards. He was taken off the ice on
a backboard and a friar received a major for the slash. The falcons
scored to tie the game 12 seconds into the penalty. Then Providence
went down another man on a minor. The even up call came a minute
later, even though it wasn't necessary as airforce was whistled 2
times for icing while up 5 on 3. The goahead goal came at
19:59.9999994 of the second and was (in the minds of the friar
faithful controversial and) the breaker as it gave the falcons a lift
and the friars a letdown. Air force opened up the two goal bulge
early in the third. Providence pulled within one with about 7 minutes
to go, but were unable to get the equalizer to send the game into
overtime.

The teams meet again tomorrow afternoon. The crowd was sparse at
1351, but announcer jim bowman misread it as 13,xxx for a big roar of
approval from the crowd.

Steve's condition: I understand from the trainer and a couple of the
players that he had feelings in his hands and legs and the c-collar
and backboard were precautionary. Will post more tomorrow.
