Summary:
The near capacity crowd at Achilles Rink saw some of the worst of Union
hockey in the 1st period, but was treated to a 5-goal outburst in the 3rd
period, including 3 goals in 35 seconds, as the Dutchmen pulled away from the
Hawks for their 5th consecutive victory. Terry Campbell's 3 points moved him
into a tie with Tod Fobare for the career scoring record at Union. The win was
the second of the season against St. Anselm. Union won the first meeting 8-1 in
the consolation game of the Achilles Tournament. It was also senior night, with
Terry Campbell, Brian Lucey and Bill Sedergren being honored.
Union came out strong early in the 1st period, but could not score.
They seemed to get frustrated and played very defensively for the rest of the
period. Union was lucky they were not playing a more powerful opponent, or they
could have been down by several goals after the first period. Fortunately the
Hawks could only manage 2 goals against sophomore goalie Jim Helkie.
The second period started with more sloppy Union play. The Hawks were
getting a stick on every Union pass like they had in the 1st period. At 9:30,
Craig Ferrero finally got the Dutchmen on the board. The play started to shift
more in the Dutchmen's favor later in the period. The biggest goal of the game
came with Union on the power play when Terry Campbell scored at 19:47. That
seemed to take away any momentum the Hawks had left right before the period
break.
Union's depth apparently was too much for the Hawks in the third
period. At 5:17, Rich Burchill scored his 11th goal of the year to give the
Dutchmen their first lead at 3-2. 21 seconds later, Jeff Jiampetti scored his
12th. 14 seconds after that, Jayson Flowers scored from a bad angle. The Hawks
were in shock, and called a time out. The crowd was really into the game by
this point. The announcer had not even given the scoring on the 3rd goal, and
the Dutchmen had their 5th goal. After this, all attention turned to senior
Terry Campbell, now just one point away from Tod Fobare's career scoring
record. Campbell spent the rest of the game on the ice, playing defense during
Union power plays. At 14:55, Campbell tied the record when he assisted on Craig
Ferrero's second goal of the game. Union kept the pressure on for the final 5
minutes, and Campbell had several chances at breaking the record. I've never
seen so much excitement left in a 5-goal game with 30 seconds left as there was
in this game.
The Dutchmen also clinched home ice for the first round of the
playoffs, as 5th place RIT lost to #1 Elmira in overtime on Saturday night.
Union will host a playoff game on Tuesday, February 26, most likely against
RIT. Union moves to 16-3-3 in the league, 17-4-3 overall. The Hawks fall to
5-17-2. It's all uphill from here for Union. The Dutchmen finish out the
regular season at nationally ranked Middlebury on Tuesday night. The game could
be important when it comes time to select teams for the NCAA's. Things will
only get more difficult in the playoffs, and even more difficult next season.

Other notes:
- Terry Campbell's 52 points make him the 7th player in Union history to score
more than 50 points in a season, and the first since Gill Egan in 1985.
- Junior Tim Cregan came back from a shoulder injury to play in Saturday
night's game. Union has no major injuries going into the final game of the
regular season.
